Can Naturopathic Doctor’s Prescribe?

Naturopathic Doctors, who have successfully completed their Standard of Practice for Prescribing have the scope of practice to prescribe certain scheduled drugs, such as anti-depressants, anti-hypertensive drugs, antibiotics and more.

However, limitations in Ontario to their scope, restricts Naturopathic Doctors and their patients access. As such, our Naturopathic Doctors collaborate with Nurse Practitioners, for best results for our patients.

In Ontario, Naturopathic Doctors can prescribe Bio-identical hormones (estradiol, estriol, progesterone), Natural Desiccated Thyroid, Vitamin D3 and more outlined in Table3. For further understanding, our Naturopathic Doctors will be happy to meet with you.

Bio-Identical Hormones(BHRT)

Naturopathic Doctors who can prescribe, will sometimes recommend BHRT to help balance hormone levels, alleviate menopausal and perimenopause sysmtpoms, vaginal atrophy, help with fertility (due to hormonal imbalances), address thyroid concerns and more

Bio-identical hormones are a type of hormone therapy that is derived from plant sources and are designed to be structurally identical to the hormones naturally produced by the human body.

Naturopathic doctors who take the necessary education in hormone therapy and have received appropriate training and certification can provide guidance and prescribe bio-identical hormones based on individual patient needs. They typically take a holistic approach, considering the patient's overall health, lifestyle, and specific symptoms before recommending or prescribing bio-identical hormones.

It's important to note that the use of bio-identical hormones is a medical treatment and should be approached with caution. Our Naturopathic doctors will conduct a thorough assessment, including hormone level testing, and monitorng levels, when prescribing BHRT. Regular monitoring and follow-up visits are also essential to ensure the treatment is effective and safe for the patient.

If you have specific questions or concerns about bio-identical hormones or would like to explore this treatment option further, it is recommended to consult with a qualified naturopathic doctor who specializes in hormone therapy. They can provide personalized advice and guidance based on your individual health needs and goals.

Natural desiccated thyroid (NDT)

NDT is a prescription medicatio that is derived from the thyroid glands of pigs. It contains a combination of thyroid hormones, including thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which are naturally produced by the human thyroid gland. NDT is primarily used in the treatment of hypothyroidism, a condition characterized by an under-active thyroid gland.

NDT is considered an alternative to synthetic thyroid hormone replacement therapy, which typically involves the use of synthetic T4 hormone medication. Some individuals prefer NDT due to its natural origin and the presence of both T4 and T3 hormones, as opposed to synthetic T4-only medications.

It's important to note that the use of NDT should be done under the supervision and guidance of a healthcare professional, such as a naturopathic doctor or an endocrinologist. Our Naturopathic Doctors will assess your specific medical needs, monitor your hormone levels, and adjust the dosage accordingly.

As with any medication, NDT may have potential side effects and interactions with other medications. It's crucial to discuss your medical history, current medications, and any concerns with your healthcare provider before starting or making any changes to your thyroid medication regimen.

If you have a history of thyroid concerns or experience the following symptoms, speak with our Naturopathic Doctors for personalized advice and guidance regarding the use of natural desiccated thyroid or any other medical treatment.

In some cases, oral vitamin D supplements may not be sufficient to correct severe deficiencies or certain medical conditions. In such situations, healthcare professionals may recommend vitamin D3 injections to ensure a more rapid and effective increase in vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, is the natural form of vitamin D that is synthesized in the skin when exposed to sunlight. It plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy bones, supporting immune function, and regulating calcium levels in the body.

It's important to note that the administration of vitamin D3 injections should be done under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional. Vitamin D3 at levels higher than 2000 can be toxic, if not assessed and administered properly . They will determine the appropriate dosage and frequency based on individual needs and medical conditions.

As with any medical intervention, there may be potential risks or side effects associated with vitamin D3 injections. These can include injection site reactions, allergic reactions, or interactions with other medications. It is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before considering or initiating any vitamin D3 injections.
