Who doesn’t love September?
As patio season comes to a close and the evenings grow steadily cooler, we leave the languid pace of summer behind and strap ourselves in as work and school ramp up and we head full steam into the world of projects, deadlines, midterms, targets, and sky-high expectations. Are you suddenly sweating again despite the drop in temperature? Don’t worry; we’ve all been there, and we’ve all found ways through it. But does it have to be such a pain? While Fall can signify a transition to more responsibilities and a busier and faster-paced lifestyle, the journey doesn’t have to be as stressful or overwhelming as you might be dreading. Whether you’re struggling with looming deadlines, prepping for the start of a new school term, or trying to get ahead of your workload, the following tips were put together to help you minimize stress, avoid burnout, and find the balance that works for you.
1. Make a Schedule
Sometimes we can be expected to take in so much new information that the prospect of keeping up with it all can feel pretty overwhelming. Making a schedule is a great way to start organizing what can often feel like an endless flood of new tasks into a structure you can manage, and help you find some of that much-needed wiggle room
2. Break It Up
Not even sure where to start? Looking at a project as a whole can often induce stress, but when we break it down into smaller steps, it appears less intimidating. As tempting as it can be to put off a large task or complete it all in one go, you can save yourself a lot of worry and hassle by breaking it down into smaller steps and dedicating each day to a manageable chunk of work.
3. Prioritize
The items on your to-do list are naturally going to vary in importance, urgency, and amount of work required. Ranking those items can help identify the most important and imminent tasks so that you can start putting your schedule to use. What requires your immediate attention? What can wait until tomorrow, or even next week?
4. Pace Yourself
The good news is that everything doesn’t need to be done all at once, so why worry about it all at once? Having already identified your priorities, see if you can narrow it down to one or two top priorities per day, while scattering the rest across the remainder of your week.
5. Be Patient
We’d all like to be able to say we always give 100%, but what does that really mean? Doing your best and giving your all is going to look very different from one day to the next. Some days, we’re at the top of our game. Other days, we find that we’re just too tapped out to get much done. It’s okay to set the bar based on where you’re at today.
6. Take Breaks
We all need to recharge one in awhile, and it can be easy to ignore that need in favour of overworking ourselves and risking burnout. Building some breaks into your schedule can make it easier to increase work-life balance, incorporate some leisure time into your day, and eventually return to the task at hand feeling refreshed and with renewed focus.
7. Unwind
Give yourself that hour or two at the end of the day to find something relaxing or enjoyable to do to wind down. Burning the midnight oil can interfere with sleep, which only further increases stress and robs you of the opportunity to decompress. For anything that didn’t make the top of your priority list, there is always tomorrow.
8. Keep Perspective
There may be times when it feels like “It’s all riding on this one project!” but is that always the case? Ask yourself, what is realistically the worst thing that can happen if you fall behind or that task doesn’t get done, and is that worth stressing over? You may surprise yourself!
