You wake up in the morning, roll out of bed and suddenly feeling a sharp pinching sensation in your neck. Unfortunately, too many of us find ourselves in this situation at some point in our lives. This pain often comes on suddenly and seemingly out of nowhere. It can also be quite aggravating and may even interfere with your activities of daily living such as getting dressed, lifting your kids or checking your blind spot while driving.
The good news however is that you are not alone and help is available!
Approximately 34% of the general population experiences neck pain, but not all neck pain is the same. There are multiple pain generating structures within our neck and upper back region that can lead to discomfort, irritation and loss of function. These structures include, but are not limited to bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves. And since there are many different causes of neck pain, there are various treatment options available.
Here at the Village Health Clinic, our chiropractor and/or massage therapist will be able to assess and diagnose your area of concern. The assessment will include both a history and a physical exam. Once a diagnosis is made, a treatment plan will be developed to best suit you and your specific condition. A combination of the following treatment modalities are commonly used during our chiropractic and massage therapy appointments.
1. Soft Tissue Release – Working on the soft tissues such as the muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia to help decrease tension and tightness.
2. Joint Mobilizations and Manipulations – Working to increase range of motion in areas of the body where restrictions are found.
3. Patient Education – Discussing ways to help prevent and manage pain in day to day life and assessing what ergonomic adjustments can be made at home and in the workplace.
4. Rehabilitation – Prescribing exercises to stretch and/or strengthen specific areas based on findings of the physical examination.
5. Ice/Heat – The use of ice and/or heat may be recommended based on the stage of injury and which tissues are involved.
